CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A student was arrested after a loaded gun was found at Indian River High School in Chesapeake Monday, officials said.
No students or staff were threatened, according to a message from the school's principal sent to students' parents. The Chesapeake Police Department didn't share the student's age or what time the gun was found.
"I want to remind our students that weapons of any kind are not allowed on school grounds and having one will result in serious consequences," Principal Naomi Dunbar said in the message to parents. "In this case, disciplinary action was taken immediately and the incident has been referred to the Chesapeake Police Department for further investigation."
She added that Chesapeake Public Schools will "prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone who threatens the safety of our schools."
Dunbar encouraged parents to talk to their children about items that aren't allowed at school, saying incidents like this provide opportunities for teachable moments.
