Man arrested after string of shootings in Edenton, NC

EDENTON, N.C. — A man was arrested in Edenton, North Carolina, and faces several charges after several shooting incidents earlier this year, police said.

A spokesperson for the Town of Edenton outlined several shooting incidents that 18-year-old Donelle Lee Capehart Jr. is accused of committing. The spokesperson said many victims were inside homes and stray bullets entered without hitting anyone.

On January 25, in the 700 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Avenue, two children and an adult were victims in a non-fatal shooting. Capehart was charged with three counts of felony discharge of a weapon into occupied property and one misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm in town limits in connection to this incident.

On January 26, in the 300 block of North Moseley Street, eight adults were victims in a non-fatal shooting. Capehart was charged with two counts of felony discharge of a weapon into occupied property and one misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm in town limits in connection to this incident.

On February 4, in the 200 block of East Freemason Street, two elderly adults were victims in a non-fatal shooting. Capehart was charged with two counts of felony discharge of a weapon into occupied property, one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and one misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm in town limits in connection to this incident.

On April 3, in the 300 block of Boswell Street, an adult was a victim of a non-fatal shooting. Capehart was charged with one count of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and one misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm in town limits in connection to this incident.

Capehart was arrested Saturday around 9:30 p.m. by Edenton police. He is currently being held on a secured bond of over $1 million.

"We must address the access to guns; so many people are possessing guns that should not have access to them," Edenton Police Chief Henry King wrote in a news release. "We remain committed to the Town Council's initiative to strive to be a crime-free community through education and enforcement. However, we need everyone to get involved and gain the courage not to be intimidated by anyone. Edenton is our community, and together, we shall set the tone and let these few individuals know that we will speak up."
