RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) are warning Virginians that scammers are impersonating deputies and telling people that there is a warrant out for their arrest for missing jury duty.

VSP said that there have been several reported incidents where a Virginia resident was contacted by someone claiming they were a Trooper Cole Jackson or a Lieutenant Cole Jackson. The scammer then says that the resident has missed jury duty and that a warrant will be issued for their arrest unless they pay a fee up front. Then, VSP said, the scammer attempts to provide instructions to make a wire transfer.

Michelle Anaya, a spokesperson for VSP, said that "The Virginia State Police or any law enforcement agency would NEVER demand money in lieu of an arrest or consequential action."

Anaya said scammers often use spoofing applications so the phone numbers they use change frequently.

If you or anyone you know has been a victim of this scam, or if you have any questions or concerns about this scam, contact VSP at 757-253-4923.
