SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. — Southampton Middle School went into lockdown Thursday morning while authorities investigated a rumor of a gun on campus.
According to the Southampton County Sheriff's Office, no firearms were located after a search of the school.
The investigation began around 10:30 a.m. when a student reported to school staff they thought they heard another student say that they had a gun, the Southampton County Sheriff's Office said. Since then, the student said they weren't exactly sure what they heard the other student say.
Following the student's report, school administrators alerted the sheriff's office, who responded to begin a search of the building.
There were several K9 units at the school, along with law enforcement personnel from Southampton County Sheriff's Office, Franklin Police Department, Virginia State Police, Courtland Police Department, Portsmouth Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The incident is still being investigated, the Southampton County Sheriff's Office said.
