COURTLAND, Va. — A man was arrested and charged with stealing a pickup truck on Saturday in Southampton County.

According to the Southampton County Sheriff's Office, a Toyota Tacoma was reported stolen from the 16000 block of Plank Road on July 17.

An initial investigation led deputies to believe the vehicle was in the Greensville County or Sussex County area.

The following day, the stolen pickup truck was found in Sussex County at the Wakefield Inn Motel, and further investigations led to authorities identifying 38-year-old Brent Freeman of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as their suspect.

When it was determined that Freeman was still in a room at the motel, an arrest and search warrant were secured.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Freeman surrendered and was taken into custody by Sussex County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police before being transported to their jail.

The Southampton County Sheriff's Office charged Freeman with grand larceny of a motor vehicle, while charges from the Sussex County Sheriff's Office are pending.

Freeman is set to appear in the Southampton County General District Court on Tuesday.
