SMITHFIELD, Va. — A woman was shot and taken to the hospital for treatment in Smithfield on Saturday.
Smithfield Police officials say they are investigating a shooting that happened in the 700 block of Wrenn Road; police were dispatched around 3:50 p.m. When officers arrived on scene they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the leg. Emergency Medical Services took the victim to the hospital.
She has since been released and is cooperating with the investigation.
Investigations revealed the shooting stemmed from a dispute between residents of two apartments. Witness statements and evidence "suggest that the altercations escalated when firearms were presented and discharged." Smithfield police said. Multiple cartridge casings and other evidence were found at the scene. Evidence dictated that rounds were fired in both directions.
Warrants executed on both apartments uncovered other firearms and ammunition. The location of the incident was less than 1000 feet from Westside Elementary.

Lawrence was charged with possession of ammunition and firearms by a convicted felon, malicious wounding, and more.
