VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — It was another violent weekend in Hampton Roads. At least three people are dead and another person is hurt after a string of shootings across the area.
Police detectives in Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News say officers responded to separate shootings in their cities.
The most recent shooting happened on Keelboat Circle in Virginia Beach, overnight. A spokesperson for the department could not say how old the victim is or the extent of her injuries. There is no word yet on any suspects.
Police in that city are also investigating a shooting at Carriage House Apartments off Wesleyan Drive. Police first reported this shooting at 1 a.m. Sunday.
Again, a department spokesperson could not say how old the victim is but confirmed he died in the shooting and said officers have potential suspects in custody.
Jaquarius Sadler said he was at home just before midnight when he heard gunshots.
“It was probably 11:30 or 12. I’m having a good time playing a game with my friends and that’s when I heard what led to the situation or whatnot. It was very loud and sounded very close. How close it was, I thought someone was trying to come in my house or something like that," Sadler said. “It’s a good thing I didn’t have any headphones on so I could actually hear and get on the ground.”
Meanwhile in Suffolk, police there say 57-year-old Russell Edwards faces a second-degree murder charge.
Suffolk PD said they got a call about a shooting inside a home on Apple Street around 11 a.m. Sunday. The victim is a 72-year-old man.
Detectives described the Portsmouth man as an "acquaintance" of the victim, but would not go into detail about their relationship.
In Newport News, someone shot and killed a man at King's Ridge Apartments, which is about a block from Jefferson Avenue. It happened shortly before midnight, Saturday.
The victim was identified as 42-year-old Phillip Dewayne Murphy, Jr. Police haven’t identified a suspect.
In Portsmouth, a man is hurt after a shooting on Portsmouth Boulevard at around 2 a.m. Sunday. Police say he should be OK.
