NORFOLK, Va. — Police say an officer and a suspect have both been shot in Norfolk on Saturday afternoon.
Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot said officers had been called to the 3800 block of Arcadia Street to assist with a Child Protective Services call around 3:15 p.m.
According to Talbot, arriving officers were almost immediately met by a "combative" woman. As police tried to bring the situation under control, Talbot said a man exited a home and began to open fire at the officers.
Police returned fire, striking the man multiple times. Talbot said one officer was also shot multiple times during the exchange.
Both the officer and suspect were taken to the hospital. In a news release, Norfolk PD said the officer is expected to recover, while the suspect sustained life-threatening injuries.
Talbot did not provide any details about the CPS call that brought police to the Arcadia Street address but did say the child involved was safe and that there is no greater threat to the community.
Norfolk's top prosecutor, Commonwealth's Attorney Ramin Fatehi, also arrived at the scene of Saturday's shooting and urged people to not shoot at police.
"People need to stop shooting at the police," Fatehi declared. "I hate to be that blunt about it, but it's as simple as that." He later added, "that it never goes well, and people need to think twice and not do that."
Virginia State Police have been called to handle the police shooting investigation. Norfolk police said all officers involved in Saturday's shooting will be placed on administrative duty, pending the outcome of the investigation.
