PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A man has pleaded guilty to the 2022 shooting death of his younger brother, the Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney announced Tuesday.
The shooting happened on June 23, 2022, in the 700 block of Hancock Avenue, the Portsmouth Police Department said. Officers arrived at the scene where they found Clarence McManes, 60, dead from a gunshot wound to the head, and his brother, Reginald McManes, on top of him. Reginald was taken into custody.
Prosecutors said Reginald told detectives he had been carrying his gun in his waistband when it fell out and misfired when it hit the ground, accidentally shooting his brother in the process.
On Tuesday, Reginald McManes pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 10 years with all time suspended, except for time served, along with four years of supervised probation.
