Neighbors recount Portsmouth shooting that hospitalized boy

Investigators say the two suspects are considered armed and dangerous following the shooting on High Street near the London Oaks Apartments.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — More than 24 hours after a shooting sent a boy to the hospital, Portsmouth police are still looking for two suspects.

Investigators say the two suspects are considered armed and dangerous following the shooting on High Street near the London Oaks Apartments.

13News Now talked to neighbors who saw the aftermath of the violence near the apartment complex's laundry center.

One woman said she heard a gunshot at around 5 p.m. Tuesday. When she looked outside, she saw a boy lying hurt on the ground.

The neighbor said she quickly called 911 and police officers soon filled the area. There, police say they found a boy with a gunshot wound. First responders took him to the hospital.

Investigators haven’t released the boy’s exact age or given an update on his condition.

Investigators say the suspects are between 5'9" and 5'11" and weigh between 130 and 150 pounds. One was last seen wearing a black mask and black sweatshirt with the adult cartoon character, Bart Simpson on the front. The other was last seen in a red sweatshirt and blue jeans.

“It’s important if you see something, say something," Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover said.

13News Now caught up with Mayor Glover at Wednesday's “Roc the Block” event. He said youth violence, or any violence, is unacceptable.

“It’s not something we’re going to solve overnight. We’re going to continue to work at it and put the resources and work that need to be there to make it so," Mayor Glover said.

The mayor emphasized the need for city leaders and community members to work together to put a stop to the violence.

“We want to be vigilant. We want to be consistent, but we also want to share with the citizens of the city of Portsmouth, we need you to help us," Mayor Glover said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
