Woman arrested following hit-and-run that injured a teenager in Isle of Wight

Virginia State Police troopers responded to a report of a crash on Benn's Church Road that sent a boy to the hospital early Saturday morning.

SMITHFIELD, Va. — A woman was arrested after a hit-and-run sent a teenager to the hospital on Saturday, Virginia State Police (VSP) confirmed Tuesday.

VSP, along with the Isle of Wight Sheriff's Office and the Suffolk Police Department, teamed up to find the car that hit a 14-year-old boy who was walking his dirt bike across Benn's Church Boulevard early Saturday morning.

The 14-year-old boy was found badly hurt after the crash, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, VSP said.

VSP said a 2019 Nissan Rogue fled the scene of the crash, but a car profile was located in the vicinity of the crash with matching evidence. Police found that it was registered to 31-year-old Chanice Atkinson.

The Newport News Police Department and Hampton Police Division were also enlisted to help locate the vehicle and its owner. On Sunday, VSP found the car with extensive damage, along with Atkinson, in Gloucester.

Police seized the car, and Atkinson was arrested Monday. She's charged with felony hit and run, and was taken to Western Tidewater Regional Jail. She received a $3,500 unsecured bond.

Police did not release an update on the injured teenager's condition.
