PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Five people were shot late Saturday night in Portsmouth, and one of them died.
According to a spokesperson for the Portsmouth Police Department, their dispatch was contacted shortly after 11 p.m. requesting assistance on Commonwealth Ave. between Rodman Avenue and Turnpike Road. When they got to that location, they found four people who had been shot.
Medics responded and transported the victims to local area hospitals. Currently, three of the victims are in serious condition, and the fourth victim's injuries were described as "life-threatening."
While at that location, shortly after 11:30, officers heard multiple shots coming from nearby, and Portsmouth dispatch received multiple calls for a shooting on Virginia Avenue near XX, more than a mile away.near London Blvd. Police responded and found a man who'd been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The spokesperson said both shootings are actively being investigated. It wasn't indicated whether they believe the shootings are related.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, these are the 91st and 92nd shooting incidents in Portsmouth so far in 2023. The man who died is the 34th homicide victim so far this year, with 42 having been killed in 2022.
