NORFOLK, Va. — The U.S. Navy has charged a sailor in the death of another sailor.

According to a press release from the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic (NRMA) Public Affairs Office, Master-at-Arms Third Class Lyndon Joel Cosgriff-Flax was killed on April 28 earlier this year during a boating incident, involving one of the installations of harbor security boats on the York River.

An unnamed sailor has been charged by the Navy in connection with the incident. Those charges include negligent homicide in the death of Cosgriff-Flax, making a false official statement, and two counts of dereliction of duty.

A spokesperson for the station had stated at the time of Cosgriff-Flax 's death that it happened on a harbor security boat shortly after 8 p.m. and that sailors were undergoing security boat training and familiarization on the river when 22-year-old Master at Arms Petty Officer Third Class Lyndon Joel Cosgriff-Flax accidentally fell overboard. He died from his injuries.

The NRMA also said the sailor is assigned to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and will remain unnamed until charges have been referred.

No date has been set for court proceedings.
