VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Norfolk man has learned his sentence after stabbing another man to death in 2023.

According to a news release from the City of Virginia Beach's Commonwealth's Attorney Office, Kavitt Conway, 31, pleaded guilty to the murder of Anthony Garcia.

It all stemmed from an April 25, 2023 incident at a 7-Eleven store in Norfolk.

The release stated that Garcia and a woman were in her car with her children at the convenience store. The woman and Conway had been in a years-long "violent and tumultuous relationship," according to the Commonwealth's Attorney Office.

Officials said Conway approached the woman's car, began banging on the windows and demanded that Garcia and the woman get out of the car. Conway then reached into the car through the sunroof and pulled Garcia's hair – that's when officials said Garcia and the woman took off in their car.

According to the release, Conway got into his car and began to chase Garcia and the woman onto the interstate. Then, officials said Conway rammed into their car several times.

Garcia drove to a family member's house, approximately 20 minutes away, and when he got out of the car – Conway jumped out of his car and tackled Garcia, the release stated.

The family members heard the commotion, grabbed their gun and ran outside, officials said. Garcia's uncle threatened to shoot Conway – when he saw Garcia being attacked, according to the release.

That's when officials said Conway jumped off of Garcia and ran away – but he had already stabbed Garcia eight times. Garcia died before EMS arrived, the release stated.

Conway took off to Henrico, Virginia, and police found him in a hotel room a few days later.

Circuit Couty Judge James C. Lewis sentenced Conway on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in Garcia's death. According to the plea agreement, Conway was sentenced to 50 years in prison with 22 years suspended – leaving him with 28 years to serve behind bars.
