Man in custody after Norfolk barricade situation ends peacefully, police say

Officers who responded determined the man was having a mental health crisis, according to the Norfolk Police Department.

NORFOLK, Va. — A man is in custody after a barricade situation in Norfolk ended peacefully Tuesday evening, police said.

The incident happened in the 6200 block of Chesapeake Boulevard, which is near the intersection with Norview Avenue and Sewells Point Road.

According to the Norfolk Police Department, officers responded to the area shortly after 3:30 p.m. for a report of a person with a weapon. When getting there, officers determined the man was having a mental health crisis.

The police department said its hostage and crisis negotiation and special operations teams were called out there to help. Following negotiations, police took the man into custody shortly before 5 p.m. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), police said the situation ended peacefully.

The man was taken to a hospital to be treated for self-inflicted injuries, and he is expected to survive.
