NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A woman is dead after an alleged domestic assault in Newport News early Monday morning.
Police officers were called to the residence in the 1000 block of 75th St. at 2:25 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive female, according to a Newport News Police Department (NNPD) press release.
They found a woman inside the residence, not breathing. Medics pronounced her deceased at the scene.
The woman has been identified as Emma Carolina Lopez Navarre, 36. Police say she had been involved in a domestic assault with a man known to her.
Javier Hernandez-Orellana, 47, was taken into custody at the scene without incident, the press release stated. He has been charged with second-degree homicide.
“Chief Drew would like to thank the officers for their quick response and diligent work on this case throughout the morning,” the press release stated.
Police have not specified the woman's cause of death, but say it was not a shooting.
No further information has been released.
