Newport News teen accused with making school threat in Greensville County

Schools in Greensville County were shut down as a precaution on Friday.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A 13-year-old from Newport News is facing six charges for allegedly making threats to a school in south-central Virginia.

According to the Greensville County Sheriff's Office, the teen sent messages threatening to kill or harm staff and students at E.W. Wyatt Middle School in Emporia. The threats shut down all schools in Greensville County on Friday.

"The Greensville County Sheriff's Office does not take these type of threats lightly," Greensville Sheriff W.T. Jarratt Jr. said in a news release. "We will investigate all incidents to the fullest in pursuing criminal charges and prosecuting to the maximum allowed by law."

Investigators said the 13-year-old has friends in the school system. The teen is being held in a juvenile detention facility until their next court date.
