1 killed, 2 hospitalized after Newport News shooting

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. A 17-year-old boy later arrived at the hospital.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A man is dead and two other people are in the hospital following a shooting Thursday morning in Newport News, police said.

The shooting marked Newport News' 44th homicide this year, which now ties the city's all-time record.

It happened at the intersection of 74th Street and Roanoke Avenue. Police say just before 11 a.m., officers found two people with gunshot wounds.

One of the men, 18-year-old Rey'll Parks of Hampton, died at the scene. The other victim, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said that a short time later, an adult man also suffering from gunshot wounds arrived at the hospital, having been driven there by another person. Police said he, too, is also being treated for possible life-threatening injuries.

One neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous said she's lived in the area for more than a decade. She heard a woman across the street screaming, and saw one of the men lying in her neighbor's yard.

“It’s definitely unnerving. I mean, and it’s sad too because it’s right before Christmas time. Most of the time when these things happen, it’s over unnecessary stuff. Somebody lost their life and somebody lost their children, you know," she said.

Detectives are still investigating what led to the shooting. No suspects have been publicly identified at this time.
