Newport News police seeking info about homicide overnight Friday

Police say there is currently no suspect information after a man was found outside with a fatal gunshot wound late Friday night.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News police are investigating a man's death late Friday night as a homicide.

Just before midnight, a gunshot detection system called Shotspotter detected a potential gunfire event in the 500 block of Settlement Lane, according to the Newport News Police Department (NNPD).

Officers responded to that area and found a man outside with "at least one gunshot wound," an NNPD release stated. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

As of 2 a.m., detectives and forensics personnel were still processing the crime scene, NNPD said.

Police said there is no suspect information at this time. They are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 911 or the NNPD's non-emergency number at 757-247 - 2500.
