WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A New Kent man wanted in Williamsburg for taking unlawful video in September of 2022 was indicted on several charges last week.
Richard Lee Gibson, 59, was indicted on abduction with intent to defile, object sexual penetration, and sexual battery on May 10, according to the Williamsburg Police Department.
WPD said investigators connected Gibson to an abduction that happened on Sept. 30, 2022, near the intersection of Prince George Street and Armistead Avenue.
Investigators believe Gibson grabbed a woman from behind and groped her. The woman managed to scream, and Gibson released her and ran off.
While collecting additional evidence, investigators linked Gibson to another incident that happened that same day. Gibson reportedly placed his cellphone between the legs of an unsuspecting woman while it was recording. The incident happened in the 5000 block of Richmond Road.
Months later, on March 19, Gibson was arrested in Florida. Police said Gibson was sailing a boat in the Caloosahatchee River when a person recognized him from news articles. The person called authorities and tipped them off to Gibson's whereabouts.
