Mother, charged with child abuse after baby taken from CHKD, speaks from jail

The woman charged after a baby was taken from the Children’s Hospital of The King's Daughters is speaking out in a jailhouse interview.

NORFOLK, Va. — The woman charged with child abuse after a baby was taken from a Norfolk hospital on Sunday night claims she’s innocent!

Norfolk police say officers found the baby in Chesapeake and returned the child to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). Police also arrested 31-year-old Stephanie Wallace, who goes by the name Stephanie Campbell.

In a jailhouse interview with 13News Now, Campbell remained tightlipped about what happened that night. However, she said her son, 4-month-old Samuell, was with her at the time of her arrest.

She claimed Samuell was in good health under her care.

In a statement to 13News Now Monday, a CHKD spokeswoman said if a child is removed from the hospital, putting the child’s health at risk, CHKD staff is “legally obligated to contact appropriate authorities.”

Campbell called the felony child abuse charge she’s facing "absolutely ridiculous."

“I didn’t physically abuse Samuell. I didn’t neglect him anywhere, leave him anywhere," Campbell said in her jailhouse interview. "They’re saying it’s like a medical neglect, I guess. That’s where they’re trying to derive the charge from, and it just doesn’t fall in the guidelines.”

Campbell voiced concern about her son’s treatment at CHKD. A hospital spokesperson says they can’t comment on that because of patient privacy laws.

Campbell remains in jail without bond.
