More than 1,200 reported car larcenies in Norfolk so far this year, police say

Norfolk police say they got nearly a dozen reports of car larceny downtown in just one day.

NORFOLK, Va. — 13News Now producer Naya Campbell is one of the many victims who found their car with a busted window recently.

“I was getting ready to go to work actually, and I saw that, once I got in, I saw that my window had been busted out in the back," Campbell said.

Norfolk police say they've received more than 1,200 reports of car larcenies so far this year.

In fact, investigators say they got nearly a dozen reports in just one day. Police say someone, or a group of people, broke into 10 cars and vandalized one in Downtown Norfolk Wednesday.

13News Now stopped in the Bank Street Garage and found three damaged cars on one level, with shattered glass still scattered on the floor.

One couple who lives downtown and frequently parks in the garage said someone stole items from their car about a week ago.

“It was so invasive, and so intrusive, and it was really upsetting," Norfolk resident Susan Snow Burnett said. “They took two brand new flashlights for about $50 worth, and maybe a couple of dollars in cash that we had left in the glove compartment.”

The couple hopes police increase patrols in the garage to deter the thieves.

“Just making a presence and doing it frequently," Burnett said.

Car break-ins aren’t the only problem Norfolk residents are dealing with.

Last month, police say a group of people vandalized cars on Duke Street. While the suspects were caught on video, investigators still don't know who they are.

13News Now spoke to one man who said in the overnight hours of June 20, a group of people got into the gated parking lot at River Park Condominiums. He says his car is just one of several vandalized that night.

“My right sideview mirror was ripped off the car. My car was spray painted all around and keyed," the man, who wished to remain anonymous, said. "My car was hit probably the worst with, you know, thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.”
