CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Three men were arrested Thursday after police say one stole a vehicle from a Wawa that had a child inside.

The incident began about 12:32 a.m. at the Wawa in the 3400 block of South Military Highway, according to Chesapeake Police Department Master Police Officer Leo Kosinski. A woman pulled up to a gas pump and left her vehicle running with a 2-year-old child inside while she went inside to pay. When she came out, the vehicle was gone, so she called police.

Soon, however, she discovered her vehicle parked in a different spot, and when she looked inside, her child was unharmed, and no belongings were missing.

Police said they reviewed security footage and saw three men pull up in a red truck, and one of them got into the woman’s vehicle and drove away. Less than a minute later, however, he had returned the vehicle and left with the others.

Police sought the men’s red truck and located it a short distance away. A pursuit took place from Deep Creek to Greenbrier and back to Deep Creek before it ended in the area of College Drive on Interstate 664. Kosinski said officers used spike strips to end the pursuit safely.

Dakwan Khiree Stephenson, 32, is charged with conspiracy to commit abduction, abduction of a minor, resisting arrest, auto theft, conspiracy to commit auto theft, driving after forfeiture of license, receiving stolen goods, disregarding a police command to stop and drug possession.
