Police: Man sentenced to prison for shooting mother 14 times, leading to her death

Traivon McNulty was arrested in Delaware two days after shooting and killing his mother.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A Virginia man is set to serve 35 years in prison for the murder of his adoptive mother. Investigators say Traivon McNulty, 23, of Chesapeake tried to run away after shooting his mom 14 times, leading to her death.

McNulty was convicted of first-degree murder, use of a gun while committing murder, robbery, and shooting into an occupied home.

As the result of a plea agreement, a judge sentenced McNulty to 35 years in prison for the murder.

Investigators say on July 17, 2021, McNulty asked his adoptive father to drive him to the bank. While in the car returning from the bank, McNulty and his father got into an argument over McNulty not pulling out money to pay rent due to his adoptive mother.

When the two got back to their home, McNulty walked inside and shot his mother 14 times, killing her. He then ran outside, knocked his father over, and stole his father's keys to the car. McNulty then drove the stolen car out of the state. He was located and arrested in Delaware just two days later.

His adoptive mother is survived by several family members who testified before the court, expressing the impact her death had on their lives. Other family members wrote letters to the judge.
