NORFOLK, Va. — A man will spend two and a half years in prison after stealing a car and violating probation for previous offenses. 24 -year-old Deshaun Ware was sentenced on Friday, Feb 23, 2024.
On Dec. 8, 2022, a Norfolk resident reported to Norfolk Police that his car, a 2016 Volvo XC60, had been stolen from his home.
Later that afternoon, an officer noticed a car of the same make and model being driven recklessly near the intersection of I-264 and Newtown Rd. After doing a background check, the officer found that was the vehicle that had been reported stolen. The officer then followed it into Virginia Beach.
Coordinating with Virginia Beach Police, officers stopped the car near the intersection of Birdneck Rd and Virginia Beach Blvd. Ware, the driver, pulled over. He and a passenger tried running away on foot.
Later on, doorbell surveillance footage from the victim's neighborhood showed Ware and his passenger attempting to get into cars parked in driveways until successfully driving off with the victim's car.
On Friday, the presiding judge sentenced Ware to one year and six months in prison. Ware was also found to be in violation of probation for other, unrelated felonies, adding another year to his sentence.
