Norfolk man gets 17 years for shooting 4 people outside Legacy Lounge

Tyshawn Marquis Gray pleaded guilty to wounding four people outside Legacy Lounge in 2022.

NORFOLK, Va. — A man was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Tuesday for shooting and wounding four people outside a downtown Norfolk night club in 2022, the Commonwealth's Attorney Office said.

Tyshawn Marquis Gray, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated malicious wounding, three counts of malicious wounding, and one count of using a firearm in the commission of malicious wounding after shooting four people including a Norfolk Sheriff's Office deputy outside Legacy Lounge in 2022.

On August 5, 2022, prosecutors said Gray was out with his friends at Legacy Lounge. A fight broke out between Gray's party and another group of men. Club security separated the fight.

After being separated, Gray walked out of the club and got a .380 caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol from his truck, according to surveillance video from a nearby building.

While club security cleared out the venue, Gray walked back and fired eight rounds into the crowd that was still in front of Legacy.

Four people were wounded: Norfolk Sherriff's Office deputy Ryan Moore (shot in his shin and required skin grafts to correct his wound), two active duty U.S. Navy sailors (one shot in his right knee and one shot in his left shoulder), and one of Gray's friends who had been out with him at Legacy Lounge that night (shot in his left arm.)

No one was killed, although Gray's friend died later from unrelated circumstances.

After Gray shot into the crowd he walked back to his truck as officers and deputies including the one who had been shot ran in his direction.

Officers detained Gray and took his gun. The slide on his gun was locked back meaning he had run out of ammunition, officers said.

Forensic investigators collected eight cartridges from the scene and ballistics testing confirmed that the casings matched Gray's gun. Norfolk Police served a search warrant on Gray's truck and seized a gun safe and matching ammunition.

Gray's blood alcohol content level taken 70 minutes after the shooting was .10.

Gray was set to stand trial on March 7.
