NORFOLK, Va. — Editors's Note: A previous version of this story stated that Reid shot his former girlfriend. The story has been corrected to state that he shot a woman in the front seat while his girlfriend drove the car.

A man will spend a decade behind bars for shooting a woman while his former girlfriend was driving him to a Norfolk convenience store in March of this year, the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney Office announced Wednesday.

Lavar Reid, 46, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to malicious wounding, robbery, and two counts of the use of a firearm in the commission of those crimes.

The incident happened on March 7 when Reid's former girlfriend ran into him and offered him a ride. Reid was sitting beside the woman's grandson in the backseat when prosecutors say he shot another woman in the front seat in her breast and proceeded to demand his former girlfriend hand over her phone.

As the victim ran to a nearby house for help, officials said Reid fled the scene. He was ultimately located and brought into custody ten days later.

In addition to his 10-year sentence, Reid is ordered to not contact the victims or witnesses.
