PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A man convicted of voluntary manslaughter was sentenced on Wednesday to eight years behind bars, according to the Office of the Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney.
Following a two-day trial in November, a jury found Matthew Meek guilty of voluntary manslaughter. He also pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm as a felon.
Officials said Meek shot Ronnie Trewen, 46, during a fight on Dec. 5, 2022. Trewen drove himself to a hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Meek then got rid of the gun used in the shooting before fleeing to Elizabeth City.
In Elizabeth City, nearly two weeks after the shooting, Meek led law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Camden and Pasquotank counties. He ultimately lost control of his vehicle but managed to run away. He was later arrested at a home in Elizabeth City.
