Man fatally shot while driving vehicle in Hampton, police say

The Hampton Police Division identified the victim as Nasir Mosley, a 19-year-old Newport News man.

NORFOLK, Va. — A man died after being shot while driving his vehicle in Hampton overnight, police said.

The shooting happened in the 100 block of Atlantic Avenue, which is near Fort Monroe and Buckroe Beach. The Hampton Police Division identified the victim as Nasir Mosley, a 19-year-old Newport News man.

The investigation began around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday when dispatchers got a report of shots fired on Atlantic Avenue.

Responding officers found a vehicle that drove off the roadway and through a fence before crashing into a marsh at the dead end of Atlantic Avenue and Thimble Shoals Court.

According to police, Mosley was found dead with a gunshot wound. Investigators believe several shots were fired in the 100 block of Atlantic Avenue that hit Mosley, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and drive into the marsh.

A broken fence, debris, and tire marks are all that’s left of the deadly scene on Atlantic Avenue. Residents said the neighborhood is relatively quiet.

“I’m just in awe that this thing has happened,” said Monrovia Davis.

“This is just not a normal thing for this area,” added another resident, Carlton Garris.

Garris said he didn't hear gunshots early Tuesday morning but he heard another noise that startled him.

“I heard the thumping last night, about four thumps,” he said. “I take it, it probably was that fence going down and the placks.”

Detectives spent several hours on the scene collecting evidence. Several police markers were placed on the street. Around 6 a.m., a tow truck could be seen removing a damaged vehicle from the scene. Davis said she’s at a loss for words.

“Oh my God," she said. "It’s just devastating.”

Garris is shocked by the violence, too. He said he plans to be more vigilant in his community.

"It can happen anywhere, no matter where you live,” he said.

“We’re going to be aware of where we walk," Davis said. "That’s going to change things I know for most of us residents.”

The Hampton Police Division said the motive and circumstances surrounding this shooting are being investigated.
