HAMPTON, Va. — A man was arrested for shooting an employee at Coasters Beach Grill in Hampton earlier this month, police said.
Maurice Dontai Hill, a 45-year-old man from Portsmouth, was charged with maiming, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a felon, shooting a firearm in public and shooting within city limits.
The Hampton Police Division took Hill into custody on Friday.
The shooting on Buckroe Avenue happened May 4, sending the employee to the hospital in serious condition, according to the Hampton Police Division. Police have not identified the victim.
Earlier this month, 13News Now spoke to Shawanna Bailey, the owner of Coasters Beach Grill, who said the man shot is one of the restaurant's security guards and Saturday was his first day on the job.
Bailey said at around 11:40 p.m., a customer walked outside of the restaurant without paying a roughly $50 tab. Bailey said the security officer followed the customer outside, and that's when the customer pulled out a gun and shot the security guard.
