Man accused of impersonating James City County police arrested on kidnapping, abduction charges

Cody Hardin notified police that he had detained two minors allegedly involved in "suspicious activity" Thursday night, authorities say.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A 30-year-old man was arrested for posing as an off-duty police officer in an attempt to detain two minors in James City County Saturday evening, the James City County Police Department said.

On Thursday, Cody Hardin notified police that he had detained two minors allegedly involved in "suspicious activity." When calling dispatch, Hardin falsely claimed to be an off-duty officer without specifying the jurisdiction.

Police arrived to the Fenwick Hills neighborhood to find Hardin using a Dodge Charger that resembled a police vehicle. Responding officers released the minors back to their parents.

Officers later learned Hardin had falsely identified himself as law enforcement to dispatch and the children's parents, prompting an investigation.

Hardin was arrested shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday on abduction/kidnapping and impersonation of a police officer charges.
