Man sentenced for Norfolk murder that was caught on camera

Prosecutors said high-resolution surveillance video made it easy for them to identify Lamont Smallwood as the murder suspect.

NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk man has been sentenced to 25 years and nine months for second-degree murder, in a shooting that was caught on video.

The shooting happened in an apartment parking lot on B Avenue in Norfolk on the night of May 29, 2022. Video shows 34-year-old Lamont Smallwood knocking 26-year-old Paul Robinson to the ground, beating him, and stripping him down to his underwear before shooting him.

Prosecutors said high-resolution surveillance video made it easy for them to identify Smallwood. Additionally, a witness who was not present at the crime scene identified Smallwood at trial from the video and the car he was driving.

"Smart police work, high-quality cameras, and the crucial cooperation of a witness came together to hold Lamont Smallwood accountable for this terrible murder,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi said in a news release announcing Smallwood's sentencing.
