NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Kiln Creek Elementary School went on a modified lockdown Friday morning due to a nearby bank robbery.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office posted about the crime at Old Point National Bank on Kiln Creek Parkway in York County, a little more than a mile from the school.
Around 11:15 a.m., deputies said they were searching for a tall and muscular white man with white hair. He was wearing blue medical gloves, jeans, a black facemask, a straw hat, and a gray or white long-sleeve shirt at the time of the robbery.
The sheriff's office said he was carrying a hatchet.
A spokesperson for the school division said in the modified lockdown, students could change classes and move around the building, but they weren't allowed outside.
They were only under the modified lockdown for about an hour, according to division spokeswoman Michelle Price.
As of Friday afternoon, the lockdown was lifted and students have been dismissed for the day.
