ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WVEC) -- One of two murder suspects in Isle of Wight County is prepared to plead guilty, while the other is ready to face a grand jury.
Kareem Mitchell and Richard Holmes are both charged with murder and burglary. Appearing in court Thursday, Mitchell agreed to plead guilty in exchange for not facing capital murder charges.
For Holmes, prosecutors downgraded his charges to second-degree murder and sent the case to the grand jury.
The pair is accused of killing 80-year-old Nancy Starnes and her 58-year-old son Kenneth Starnes in their home last year. Deputies described the crime as a "brutal slaying."
