NORFOLK, Va. — With just two months left in the year, homicides in Hampton Roads are trending at their lowest level in five years.
Across the seven cities, there have been a reported 131 homicides this year.
That's 49 fewer homicides from this time in 2023, a 32% drop.
Chesapeake is the only city with a rise in homicides year over year, where police have investigated an additional two homicides in 2024.
Suffolk's 10 homicides is in line with last year.
Meanwhile, Hampton and Newport News have seen noteworthy double digit drops, with 17 fewer homicides this year in each city.
Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Portsmouth are all trending down, too.
October was one of the least-violent months this year.
Detectives in most cities are still working to solve a number of these cases.
Virginia Beach has a 100% clearance rate, with every case solved so far.
