Eastern Shore house fire under criminal investigation by Virginia State Police

A 92-year-old man was the only occupant of the home at the time of the fire Sunday, and he died, according to State Police.

ONANCOCK, Va. — Special agents with Virginia State Police are investigating a house fire on the Eastern Shore Sunday that caused a man to die.

Around 3 p.m., the Fire Chief of the Onancock Volunteer Fire Department called state police to request they investigate a residential fire on Greenbush Road, which is in Greenbush, Virginia. 

A 92-year-old man was the only occupant of the home at the time of the fire, and he died, according to a State Police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya.

The man has been identified as Melvin Manchester Shelton.

Anaya said that special agents with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation were at the scene Sunday evening and will be handling the investigation.
