NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (WVEC) -- A soldier stationed at Fort Eustis was arrested and charged with abduction after allegedly pointing a gun at a woman's head on Thursday night, Newport News police said in a news release.

Police were dispatched to the 1100 block of 22nd Street around 7 p.m., where they met the victim, an 18-year-old woman.

The woman told officers she was riding in the car with her boyfriend to go get her a phone charger. At one point she said her boyfriend, 21-year-old James Jackson Jr., changed his mind and turned their vehicle around to go back to his home, leading to an argument between the two.

The victim demanded Jackson drop her off at her residence, but while on Interstate 664 he continued on and drove past her Chestnut Avenue exit. Investigators said that victim began to push Jackson, and he pulled over the vehicle and asked her to get out. He then got out and walked over to the passenger side after the victim refused to leave.

The victim told police Jackson "brandished a firearm" and pointed the gun at her head.

Jackson then allegedly fired a shot near her head. She was not injured.

According to police, Jackson told the woman to get in the trunk, but she refused and instead sat in the back seat. They got back on the interstate and eventually Jackson dropped her off in the 3800 block of Shell Road in Hampton, police said.

Police confirmed Jackson is in the Army and stationed at Fort Eustis. He is charged with abduction, malicious shooting/throwing at a vehicle, brandishing, shooting a firearm in public space, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and reckless handling.
