CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A former teacher has been charged with child sex crimes after a Chesapeake Police Department investigation.
Police said they received information in January claiming that 31-year-old Daniel Fleming was engaged in illegal activities involving minors.
After investigation, he was charged with felony solicitation of child pornography and felony use of communication systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children.
According to the Chesapeake Police Department, he was formerly employed as a math teacher at a Chesapeake private school and was involved in a local church's youth ministry.
Court documents allege on January 1, the former math teacher used Snapchat to ask a 15-year-old boy for nude photos. The boy reportedly declined, with the criminal complaint saying, the boy "was asked to provide an outline of his boxers/underwear." Fleming allegedly sent back an explicit photo, where "clothing appears to be around the ankle of the leg in frame."
Jeff Roberts is a father of two young kids. His family lives two houses down from Fleming.
"It makes your skin crawl," Roberts said. "It just goes to show you don’t really know what’s around or what somebody’s doing behind closed doors."
Roberts also stressed the importance of warning kids about online predators.
"We talk to my kids all the time, my 11-year-old especially," he explained. "We tell her all the time don’t send any pictures of yourself, don’t respond to people you don’t know."
Greenbrier Christian Academy staff confirmed Fleming was a teacher there. They say he resigned last June and moved to StoneBridge School in Chesapeake. Greenbrier Christian Academy staff added they were not involved in the investigation into Fleming. Court records say at the time of his arrest, Fleming had recently started work at the Cavalier Hotel.
13News Now reached out to StoneBridge School, the Cavalier Hotel and Fleming’s attorney for comment, but did not hear back. Fleming will be back in court on April 12 for a bond hearing
