NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A man was found shot to death in Newport News Wednesday night, authorities announced.
The Newport News Police Department (NNPD) was called to a report of shots fired on Bulkeley Place near Highway 17.
At the scene, officers said they found a man who had been shot at least once. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Once you’ve actually experienced something like that and hear that it happened right down the road from you, it’s kind of unnerving,” said Newport News Resident Benjamin Sharp.
The sound of gunshots disturbed several residents at Hilton Village Townhomes Wednesday night.
“We were eating dinner," said a woman who did not want to be identified. "Then, I heard the gunshots.”
“It started off as just one or two," Sharp said. "Then, I started hearing more. As I started hearing them, it sounded like it was coming closer to my house.”
Sharp said the shooting has become the talk of the neighborhood. He said they heard someone running through a back alley.
“Which explains why I was hearing the shots,” he said.
Sharp recalls a shooting in the area a few years ago and isn't surprised violence hit his neighborhood.
“There was a house back here, actually, just right around the corner that somebody was shot and killed in,” he said.
As detectives piece together this investigation, these residents say they’ll be more cautious of their surroundings.
“I honestly just hope and pray all the violence with the guns stop," the woman said. "You really do want that. And I’m praying that it’s not somebody young. I mean, I wish it was nobody at all.”
Police said there is currently no suspect information.
