ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — An Elizabeth City man was convicted of first-degree murder among other charges this week, according to North Carolina District Attorney Jeff Cruden.

Brandon Kason Boyd, 24, was convicted in the October 2020 death of his cousin, 20-year-old Kaleb Mathais Bilger. Boyd was also convicted of "possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and interfere with electronic monitoring device."

"As you can imagine, the family is devastated by this senseless act of violence, which according to the evidence, was over a relatively small debt," Cruden said in a news release.

Boyd was sentenced to serve consecutive sentences of eight to 19 months for interfering with an electronic monitoring device, 14-26 months for the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and life without the possibility of parole for the first-degree murder.

The district attorney said those sentences will start once Boyd has served the 13-25 month sentence he received when his probation was revoked from his 2020 conviction of Common Law Robbery.
