CHESAPEAKE, Va. — An 18-year-old driver is facing multiple charges after a crash on Interstate 664 in Chesapeake on Monday ended a 19-year-old woman's life, Virginia State Police (VSP) said.
In a release on Wednesday, VSP announced Elvis Cruz of Portsmouth was arrested for reckless driving, failure to maintain proper control, causing death and having no valid driver's license, inspection or proof of insurance.
The charges stem from the two-vehicle crash that happened near Military Highway just before 6 p.m. Monday.
Cruz and the victim, Lauryn Leonard, were heading south in separate vehicles when VSP said their cars "made contact," leading them both to lose control. Both vehicles ran off the roadway and struck a guardrail, causing Cruz's vehicle to overturn.
Cruz was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with injuries considered not life-threatening. Leonard, however, died at the scene, police said.
