Original Story

The Virginia Beach Police Department said a suspect is at large following a deadly shooting Tuesday night.

Officers got the call around 6:30 p.m. for a shooting in the 500 block of Elm Grove Court, at Baker Woods Apartments. An adult man was killed.

“I heard four gunshots, about a one-second break, and five more shots right after that," said a homeowner who lives near the apartment complex.

He didn’t want to go on camera, but he said this is the first shooting he can recall in the area in more than 20 years.

“I mean, it was a chaotic scene," he said "One officer pulled a, looked to be a 3-year-old male boy out of the house, and the poor child was so distraught, screaming, crying. That really, really got me right in the heart.”

Virginia Beach police said the shooting is a domestic incident. They said the suspect is still on the run and they know his identity, but they are not releasing his name so they can give their warrant fugitive unit time to take him into custody safely.

“Two families are destroyed now. The family of the person who passed away and eventually the person that did it. Their family is going to be affected for the rest of their life. So it’s a crying shame.”

Police have not released the identity of the victim or his age. Virginia Beach police Chief Captain Jeffery Wilkerson tweeted police are working hard to solve the case. He also said gun violence “is never the solution.”

“We just got to find better ways to resolve disagreements than a gun," said the homeowner.
