NORFOLK, Va. — A Special Court Martial hearing will take place at Naval Station Norfolk on May 16 for a Navy SEAL who faces murder charges in connection with the death of an Army Green Beret.
On June 4, 2017, Army Staff Sgt. Logan J. Melgar was found dead in his room in embassy housing in Bamako, Mali.
Court documents claim Chief Special Warfare Operator Adam Matthews conspired with three others to break into Melgar's locked hotel room, bound him with duck tape, put him into a chokehold and strangled him.
Matthews is facing charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice of Felony Murder, Involuntary Manslaughter, Conspiracy, Obstruction of Justice, Hazing and Burglary.
The identities of the three other people involved -- another Navy SEAL and two Marines -- have not been released.
The two Marines are listed as being part of Special Operations Command. The SEALs belong to the Virginia Beach-based Navy Special Warfare Development Group. The unit is better known as SEAL Team 6, which participated in the May 2011 raid that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden at his compound.
Matthews has been decorated with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation and others. He got his start as a student at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL in July of 2003.
Since 2005, Matthews has served in the Naval Special Warfare Unit.
