VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Eric Oliver stayed quiet on Monday as a Virginia Beach judge read the extensive list of charges the 30-year-old now faces because of his alleged actions in Town Center over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) told 13News Now they received multiple 911 calls about a possible active shooter situation near Apex Entertainment. People were left scrambling for cover as gunshots rang out in a nearby parking garage.
By the time officers arrived, investigators said they found Oliver "attempting to conceal a firearm and walk away."
According to newly filed court documents, detectives believe Oliver was intoxicated when the shooting happened. When officers questioned Oliver, he purportedly stated "he did not remember what happened."
Oliver allegedly became "verbally aggressive" to the officers and moved towards them. A police officer then "took a hold of Oliver" and brought him into custody, court documents read.
VBPD said they found damage inside the parking garage, at a nearby building and to two vehicles. However, no one was hurt.
Oliver has an extensive criminal history dating back a decade, and as a convicted felon he was never supposed to have access to a gun. He was convicted for previous offenses such as assault, unlawful bodily injuries and several gun charges over the years.
The Portsmouth man now faces 12 misdemeanors and felonies for his alleged actions. If convicted Oliver could spend years in prison.
Oliver is currently being held without bail. He told the judge he wanted to talk to his attorney as soon as possible.
He is expected back in court on May 9 for a preliminary hearing.
