Chesapeake shooting triggers lockdown for nearby middle school

G.W. Carver Intermediate School was placed into lockdown Thursday afternoon, due to its proximity to a shooting on Acorn Street.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A middle school in Chesapeake was placed into lockdown Thursday afternoon due to a report of a nearby shooting, the city's police department said.

Officers with the Chesapeake Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 1700 block of Acorn Street around 1:20 p.m., a department spokesperson confirmed.

When police arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening, and he ran away.

Since G.W. Carver Intermediate School is so close to the location of the shooting incident, the school went into lockdown as a precaution, police said.

A Chesapeake Public Schools spokesman said the following message went out to the school's students, parents, faculty and staff: "The Broadlawn Neighborhood is currently locked down by police in search of a suspect. Students who live in Broadlawn are being safely held as a precaution at Carver Intermediate School until we receive the all clear from police."

The spokesman also said that students from Oscar Smith High School who live in the Broadlawn neighborhood were taken to Carver Intermediate after school until it was safe for them to walk home.

No suspect description has been released by police at this time.
