CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A Grassfield High School student has charges pending against her after police say she brought a handgun onto school grounds on Monday.
“I just started going, oh my gosh. Is she OK? I mean, the voicemail said all the students were OK, but I got very, very emotional to know that somebody had a loaded weapon,” said Chesapeake parent Melissa Comer.
When she heard the voicemail about the loaded gun found at her daughter's school this afternoon, Comer said her day came to a screeching halt.
The message sent to parents by Grassfield High School principal Brian Haughinberry said that another student saw a gun on a student and immediately told an adult.
Comer says that, at that moment, she wanted to check on her daughter who was on campus, but said the new cell phone-free policy prevented that.
"I'm sorry, but in a situation like this, I'd like my child to be able to reach out to me, and I think she's old enough and capable enough to do that,” Comer said.
Another mother of a Grassfield High School student told 13News Now that her child was never informed about the incident by any school officials, and only found out when students broke the cell phone ban policy.
Some parents said they are planning to ask the school board to do more to protect their kids.
“I'd hate to put metal detectors in for the kids in the school, but that's probably the safest thing,” Comer said
The message from administrators also said that no threats were made to students or staff during this incident, and it encourages parents to remind their students that quote that weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on school grounds.
