CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Chesapeake doctor who's accused of performing dozens of unnecessary surgeries on a number of women will face even more federal charges, according to new court documents.
Javaid Perwaiz has already been charged with healthcare fraud and aggravated identity theft. Federal prosecutors say they're going to file a superseding indictment that will bring even more charges against him.
Prosecutors filed a new motion to extend the deadline to file pretrial motions. The move comes after they received batches of evidence that include thousands of medical records, hospital records and other documents that were seized from Perwaiz's office.
Perwaiz's lawyers were told about the new evidence on Feb. 20, which will be available for up to two weeks before the prosecution files a superseding indictment that will include more charges and alleged victims.
That indictment is expected to be filed sometime between April 6 and 10.
Court documents allege that Perwaiz recorded symptoms and health complaints from his patients that were never actually voiced to him. He's accused of performing dozens of hysterectomies and other unnecessary surgical procedures where he removed different organs.
Perwaiz operated clinics in Chesapeake. Investigators believe he's been committing healthcare fraud for nearly 10 years.
