CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A Chesapeake man was sentenced to multiple life sentences after he was convicted of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl.

64-year-old Vernon Brooks was found guilty following a 3-day trial earlier this year of nine counts of taking indecent liberties with a child as a custodian, seven counts of aggravated sexual battery, and two counts of object sexual penetration.

Brooks lived with the child's family when she was 11 years old and he repeatedly abused her, according to the city's Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. She described in detail to the jury the multiple acts of sexual assault, which happened between September 1 and December 31, 2018.

On Friday, the Chesapeake Commonwealth's Attorney's Office announced a judge sentenced Brooks to a total of two life sentences and seven additional years in prison.

"The defendant will spend the rest of his life in prison," the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office wrote.
