CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A convicted felon was sentenced to more than four years in prison after illegally possessing guns and attempting to flee from Chesapeake police, Attorney General Jason Miyares said Friday.
The charges stem from June 2021 when Christopher Alexander "mistakenly" thought a police officer responding to an unrelated incident was attempting to pull him over, officials said. Alexander accelerated, eventually losing control of the vehicle and sideswiping a power pole.
He attempted to run from the scene but was ultimately apprehended and brought into custody.
Inside his vehicle, officers found two firearms he was illegally possessing.
"Alexander admitted to police officers that he was attempting to flee because he knew that he was a convicted felon in possession of the firearms in the vehicle," according to Miyares.
Alexander was previously convicted of robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and conspiracy to commit robbery.
“In order to keep our communities safe, we have to keep the repeat offenders committing the vast majority of violent crime off our streets. I’m grateful for our partnership with local and federal agencies, allowing our Ceasefire prosecutors to focus on high crime cities and produce successful prosecutions like this," said Miyares.
