CHESAPEAKE, Va. — 37-year-old Harvion Simpkins was sentenced to 45 years in prison for charges of second-degree murder and threats in writing after the 2023 death of a two-year-old girl.
The Chesapeake Commonwealth's Attorney found on March 28 and 29, 2023, officers responded to investigate vulgar and threatening text messages from Simpkins to the mother of his child.
The mother then requested for Chesapeake police to help her retrieve her multiple children from a hotel room that she was sharing with Simpkins out of fear for their safety. She had left them, including the child court documents referred to only as "Victim AB," in Simpkins' care while she went to work overnight.
At the hotel, the mother found Victim AB, two years old, with a busted lip, and bruises on her face, acting lethargic, and could not hold herself up, "crying in pain," the Commonwealth Attorney's Office said. She brought the toddler to the emergency room at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, where she had emergency surgery. Unfortunately, Victim AB died only hours later. It was discovered she died as a result of blunt force head trauma and abdominal trauma.
Simpkins, a registered sex offender in Accomack County, was convicted on July 8 of this year, and was sentenced Friday. The victim's family also has a lifetime protective order against Simpkins, prohibiting him from ever having contact with them.
